LiFePO₄ Batteries vs Lead Acid

Lead Acid Batteries

PROS
  • Readily available
  • Cheap
  • Durable
CONS
  • Heavy
  • Much shorter life-span than LiFePO₄ batteries
  • Deep cycling batteries to below 20% can permanently damage the battery’s capacity and lifetime
  • Can leak acid and discharge gas
  • High current loads can diminish the battery’s capacity

LiFe P04 Batteries

PROS
  • Long life-span (5-10 years)
  • High Cycle Life (2000 – 8000 charge/discharge cycles)
  • Half the weight of lead-acid
  • Twice the storage
  • Can be discharged up to 90% DoD without long-term damage or extreme capacity loss
  • Every part of the battery can be recycled
  • Safer than lead acid: no gasses, no heat and cannot combust
CONS
  • Not as readily available
  • Higher up-front cost than lead-acid
  • Need to use a charger with LiFePO₄ setting
